"Step inside a fairy tale." -Stephanie Garber, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Caraval This dark and atmospheric fairy tale inspired story is perfect for fans of Yellowjackets. Get swept away by this “haunting” ( Bustle) YA novel about twelve beautiful sisters living on an isolated island estate who begin to mysteriously die one by one.The Book: House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A.NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER.Between the characters and mystery (and cover), there’s a lot to love.įriendly tip: I’m someone who likes to read the ending last. Salt and Sorrows isn’t a perfect book, but it’s one - if you forgive the nautical reference - that snared me hook and line. I can smell the sunlight racing through your veins from across a room. Annaleigh just brushed things away and went on with her life.Īll my life has been moonlight and the stars. There wasn’t enough rising tension - and it was over too quickly. Some of the images in here are super disturbing and would be great for a horror flick. There was so much going on that the extra references, tangents, and plot points didn’t add to the story. While I do enjoy a good fairy tale retelling ( *cough*), this book didn’t need it. She’s got to figure it out (mostly) on her own. There are no witches or magic potions to help her solve her problem. Annaleigh can’t turn to magic for an easy out because … well. But, these supernatural elements don’t overwhelm the book. Annaleigh lives in a world where the gods exist and regularly interact with humans: buying dresses, attending plays, and sending their children to work miracles. But, the trajectories described all feel organic and realistic. Annaleigh is such a tough cookie - but one that’s infinitely compassionate and patient. The book is like a stormy November night.Īnnaleigh. Along the way she encounters gods, ghosts, and things that go bump in the night.

The villagers believe that the family is cursed.Īmongst the loss and fear, Annaleigh - one of the middle daughters - is working to solve the mystery of her sisters’ deaths … and, hopefully, save herself from the same horrible fate. The daughters are slowly being killed off. However, there’s a bigger problem at hand. Like the fairy tale, the story is about a Lord with twelve daughters who are wearing through their shoes at an alarming rate. The story takes place in an Edwardian-like world, somewhere in that mid-Industrial period - where there are lighthouses with kerosene lanterns alongside horse-drawn carriages. House of Salt and Sorrows is a retelling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses tale - with a horror twist and supernatural flare.
